Media Gallery
UC San Diego maintains a comprehensive media gallery with photos sourced and created by the university for print, online, and presentation purposes.
Access to the Media Gallery
For access to the invite-only galleries, users need to create a free photoshelter account using their primary UC San Diego email address. To request access to galleries after signing up for a photoshelter account, and for general Media Gallery inquiries, contact the University Communication Photoshelter Administrator.
Use of Content from the Media Gallery
Photos available for access in the “Marketing” category fit this criteria for photo use:
- May be used for all advertising content
- May be used for non-news web content
- May be used for brochures, rack, cards, and other printed promotional materials
- May be used for any merchandise content (e.g.., shirts, postcards, posters, mugs, mouse pads, etc.)
- May be used for any content being sold
- May be used for any content used for branding
- May be used for any content that promotes an event
Photos available for access in the "Editorial and PR" category fit this criteria for photo use:
- All photos available in the “Marketing” category may be used for “Editorial and PR”
- May be used for news story or magazine article that is not prior promotion to an event
- May be used for certain internal events such as Commencement, Homecoming, etc.
- May be used for social media that is not promotion of a product or event
For both “Marketing” and “Editorial and PR” categories, available photography covers the span of the last 4 academic years. Most photography (with certain exceptions such as campus landmarks, buildings, staff and faculty headshots, etc.) older than 4 academic years will be moved to an archive and be unavailable for the “Marketing” and “Editorial and PR” categories.
Copyright and Credit
While photos downloaded via the UC San Diego media gallery are all downloadable for those who have access, there are a few guidelines that are necessary to ensure proper use:
- Copyright of images is retained by the Board of Regents of the University of California, unless noted otherwise. The copyright line should appear as “Copyright ©️ the Board of Regents of the University of California.”
- Reproduction rights are granted for noncommercial use that markets, promotes and supports the University of California San Diego.
- Please include the credit line noted with the image when used in editorial vehicles (e.g., press releases) or external media. Credit line is not needed when publishing on UC San Diego websites.
